📻 “Le Monde dans un Casque”, the book by Fred, F5OZK

Neither a technical manual nor a novel, it is the story of a passion: a passion for the airwaves. In this book (written in French, its title means “The World in a Headset”), French radio amateur Frederick Mazoyer (F5OZK) tells the story of his journey, from the CB of his teenage years to the four corners of the globe, by way of expeditions, international contests and even contacts with space. A deeply human story that should speak to many of us, in the Canton of Vaud and beyond.

📖 Memoir 📡 From CB to amateur radio 🇫🇷 F5OZK 🤝 Ham spirit

🔗 About this article: we discovered this book through an article published by our friends at Passion Radio (in their “Portraits d'OM” section). We wanted to share it and expand on it for our amateur radio community in Switzerland. Thanks to Passion Radio for the find, and well done to Fred for this fine book.

🎧 It all starts with listening

As a teenager, it all begins with a simple knob being turned. As Fred recounts in the very first pages of his book: back then there was no internet, no mobile phones, no social media. And yet a parallel universe already existed, invisible and silent but very real: the world of radio waves.

Distant voices from somewhere else, sometimes hard to make out but fascinating. You did not always know what you were listening to or exactly where it was coming from. One thing, though, was undeniable: it was captivating. That curiosity soon turned into a passion, one that would never stop growing and that would offer far more than radio alone.

“It is the story of a passion, a passion for the airwaves, and for the invisible bonds that bring people closer despite the distance.”

It is a path that thousands of radio amateurs know well: the one that leads from CB (27 MHz) to amateur radio. Many licensed HB9 operators also started out by listening, hooking up a makeshift antenna on the balcony and straining their ears towards the unknown. This book puts that initial spark back into words.

🌍 An inspiring journey

From hesitant first contacts to exchanges with the four corners of the globe, from radio expeditions to international contests, all the way to unexpected communications (sometimes even with space), this book tells the story of an adventure full of challenges, encounters and emotions.

But beyond the antennas and frequencies, it is above all a deeply human story: one of strong friendships, solidarity, passing on knowledge, and the invisible bonds that bring people closer despite the distance. Between the lines, and without ever naming it, the book is a fine demonstration of the ham spirit: sharing, kindness and mutual help, along a journey that is still continuing within the amateur radio community.

📡 The first contacts

From passive listening to the first hesitant QSO, the book describes that magical moment when you finally dare to pick up the microphone and answer a voice from far away.

🗺️ Radio expeditions

Fred has taken part in expeditions and activations, the side of the hobby where you head out into the field, put up the antennas and operate in sometimes basic conditions.

🏆 International contests

VHF, UHF and HF contests, where you rack up contacts against the clock. A school of rigour, careful listening and good operating practice.

🛰️ Contacts with space

Communications via amateur satellites and unexpected contacts: proof that, from the attic to the sky, radio knows no borders.

💡 Who is F5OZK? Frederick “Fred” Mazoyer is a French radio amateur with a solid track record: more than 30 years on the air and numerous operating awards (Master of Radio Communication on every continent, multi-band DX awards from 80m to 10m). He cut his teeth at the F5KKD radio club in Sevran (Paris region). His QRZ page: qrz.com/db/F5OZK.

🎥 Video interview with Fred F5OZK

To take your reading further (or to make you want to discover the book), here is the video interview with Fred about “Le Monde dans un Casque” (in French). He talks about his approach, his memories and the spirit he wanted to convey in the book.

🎙️ Also worth a listen: an audio interview with Fred F5OZK was also recorded by Pierre (F4WFI), who read the book and greatly enjoyed its spirit. An ideal complement for getting to know the author before (or after) reading.

🤝 David's story (F1JXQ)

The original Passion Radio article comes with a lovely testimonial from David, F1JXQ, which perfectly illustrates the spirit of the book. We reproduce it here, because on its own it sums up what passing on knowledge between radio amateurs is all about:

“I was lucky enough to meet Fred in the 1990s at the Sevran radio club, F5KKD, in Seine-Saint-Denis, north-east of Paris. My first visit still stands out: when I arrived at the radio club, I found several OMs up a tower, busy working on the antennas. It was fascinating!

It was thanks to that team, and in particular F5OZK, F6GYH and F5PMB (SK), that I learned to become a radio amateur. I took part in my first contests with them, at first from the radio club, on 2 metres and 70 cm. That is where I learned patience, careful listening and good operating practice.

Of course, there are the regulations and the technical side to learn. But not everything you need to become a fully fledged radio amateur can be found in books. Knowing how to listen, how to operate and understanding the spirit of our hobby are learned through practice, alongside more experienced OMs who know how to pass on their passion.”

David, F1JXQ

🇨🇭 An echo in French-speaking Switzerland

Fred's journey resonates far beyond France's borders. In Switzerland too, many OMs started out on CB before obtaining the HB3 (novice) and then HB9 (CEPT) licence. The path is the same: curiosity, listening, meeting people, then getting involved in a club.

At HB9V, the Radio Amateurs of Canton Vaud club, just as in the French radio clubs Fred describes, it is this passing on of knowledge between generations that keeps the hobby alive. Contests, portable activations (think SOTA on our Swiss summits), club evenings: so many opportunities to learn the “ham spirit” that Fred describes so well.

✅ Want to get started? If listening has already got you hooked, the logical next step is the amateur radio licence. In Switzerland, USKA and clubs such as HB9V support newcomers (the licence courses themselves are given by the HB9MM club). And if you are not ready to sit the exam yet, CB (27 MHz) or SWL listening remain a wonderful way in, just as they were for Fred.
