📍 Maryville, Tennessee - Smoky Mountains
A dream shack in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains

🎯 Discover one of the most impressive amateur radio set-ups in Tennessee!

The shack of Kurt Meltzer, KC4NX, is a true example of excellence in amateur radio. Set in the beautiful foothills of the Smoky Mountains near Knoxville, this exceptional station represents years of passion, technical expertise and dedication to the hobby. With two towers strategically placed on “Beacon Hill”, an impressive collection of state-of-the-art equipment and active involvement in the local amateur radio community, KC4NX embodies the very best of the passion we share.

📖 The story of KC4NX: an inspiring journey

1972 - The beginning

Hooked at the age of 12

It all began in Illinois when a neighbour who was a radio amateur, Buzz Ross (W9ABA, SK), invited young Kurt to visit his shack. He was hooked straight away. Buzz, an experienced old-school operator, became his mentor and supervised his Novice licence exam.

1974 - General licence

Rapid progress

At just 14, Kurt passed the General class theory and Morse code exams at the FCC field office in Chicago. A remarkable achievement for such a determined young man.

1992-2012 - The difficult years

Twenty years away from HF

Because of antenna restrictions at his QTH while he was raising his family, Kurt concentrated solely on local VHF/UHF activities. He built and operated FM repeaters in the Chicago area, staying active in the hobby despite the constraints.

2012 - A new start

The move to Tennessee

Moving to Tennessee to escape Chicago's harsh winters marked a decisive turning point. The foothills of the Smoky Mountains finally offered the space needed to build the shack of his dreams. Kurt became self-employed, giving him more flexibility for his radio projects.

2013-present - The KC4NX era

Building a legendary shack

He obtained the vanity callsign KC4NX and gradually built one of the most impressive stations in the area: two towers on “Beacon Hill”, a sophisticated underground infrastructure, and active involvement in the Smoky Mountain Amateur Radio Club (president 2016-2017).

💚 A word of gratitude: “I am deeply grateful to my parents (neither of whom were hams) for tolerating my early interest in radio and letting me put up many crude experimental antennas on their house and in the garden, from the age of 13 until I left home at 18. They were wonderful. I also owe endless thanks to my wonderful and understanding wife Sharon for being so patient through all the years spent on repeater projects and now on building this station.” - KC4NX

🏔️ “Beacon Hill”: the ideal location

One of the great assets of the KC4NX QTH is the natural rise behind his house, affectionately named “Beacon Hill” by his wife Sharon. This strategic location offers exceptional conditions for radio communications.

👁️ Clear view

Clear line of sight to the distant horizon in every direction

🏘️ Isolation

Well away from neighbouring houses and sources of interference

📡 Optimal propagation

Perfect elevation for VHF weak signals and HF DX

🌄 Stunning scenery

Breathtaking views over the surrounding Smoky Mountains

📏 Site layout:

  • Local VHF tower: halfway up the hill, 30 metres from the house
  • Main HF tower: at the top of “Beacon Hill”, 107 metres from the house
  • Underground infrastructure: several trenches with surplus coaxial cables (1/2", 7/8" and 1-5/8")
  • Remote switching: preamplifiers and coax switches on the hill to optimise performance

“I only wish the previous owner had built this house closer to the top of the hill, because it took a long run of coax to reach the summit!” - KC4NX

Former president of the Smoky Mountain Amateur Radio Club (2016-2017). Actively involved in mentoring new radio amateurs and sharing knowledge.

🛠️ Equipment and infrastructure

The KC4NX station is fitted with an impressive collection of professional and state-of-the-art equipment, reflecting decades of evolution and continuous optimisation.

📡 Main antenna system

HF tower - top of Beacon Hill (107m from the house)

  • Multiband HF antennas for full coverage from 160M to 10M
  • Directional antennas for DX and contests
  • Remote switching system allowing antenna selection from the shack
  • Remote preamplifiers to optimise weak-signal reception

VHF/UHF tower - halfway up the hill (30m from the house)

  • VHF directional antennas for 6M and 2M
  • Omnidirectional antennas for the 2M, 220 and 440 repeaters
  • Satellite antennas with a pointing system
  • Optimised configuration for local communications and weak signals

🔌 Cabling infrastructure

One of the most impressive aspects of the KC4NX station is its sophisticated underground infrastructure, designed to minimise losses and maximise performance.

Professional cabling system:

  • Buried coaxial cables: several trenches with professional-grade military surplus coax
  • Three sizes available: 1/2", 7/8" and 1-5/8" for different applications
  • Remote coax switches: allow lines to be shared between several antennas
  • On-site preamplifiers: placed close to the antennas to maximise gain before cable losses
  • Professional protection: all entry points protected against lightning and surges
